AI jako fałszywy terapeuta

AI as a fake therapist: why technology cannot replace real relationships

More and more people are turning to artificial intelligence tools to cope with emotional difficulties. Apps and chatbots offer quick access, anonymity, and the promise of support. For many people who don’t have easy access to a psychologist or psychiatrist, this is a tempting alternative. However, while technology can offer temporary relief, it also carries significant risks.

Why is AI so tempting as a “therapist“?

The reasons are understandable. Appointments with specialists can be far off, and the decision to start therapy often comes with fear or shame. A chatbot responds immediately, is always available, doesn’t judge, and doesn’t ask difficult questions. It’s easy to fall into the trap of treating it as an everyday confidant.

The problem is that artificial intelligence – despite its capabilities – remains a tool, not a partner in the healing process.

Psychological Risks

Replacing human connection with an algorithm can lead to serious difficulties:

  • Emotional Dependency – Relying on AI as the sole source of support can, over time, limit the natural human need for relationships with other people.
  • Distorted Reality – Artificial intelligence can generate incorrect, inadequate, or even contradictory responses. A person in crisis might treat these as truth and deepen their problems.
  • Delayed Help – The expectation that “AI will be enough” means that the moment of seeking professional support is postponed. This is especially dangerous when symptoms worsen and require rapid intervention.

What AI Cannot Do

Psychotherapy is not just a set of techniques or advice. It is primarily a relationship – an authentic encounter between two people. A therapist hears not only words, but also emotions, doubts, pauses in speech, and sometimes silence. They perceive the context in which the client functions, their history, and experiences that influence current difficulties.

Artificial intelligence can offer information, but it cannot provide empathetic presence, a sense of safety, and understanding. Nor can it replace the process in which a person learns to see themselves in a new way and gradually regains agency.

How Can Therapy Help?

Therapy provides a space to see your problems in a broader context. It helps to distinguish real needs from temporary escapes that technology might offer. Working with a therapist, you can:

  • understand the sources of fear and confusion,
  • learn to recognize your own emotions and needs,
  • develop healthy coping strategies,
  • rebuild the ability to form relationships.

This is a process that requires time and commitment, but it leads to lasting changes – ones that no algorithm can guarantee.

Summary

AI can be an interesting tool for supporting daily life, but it cannot replace genuine human contact. In times of crisis, it is precisely a conversation with another person, full of empathy and understanding, that proves crucial.

If you notice that technology is increasingly taking on the role of a confidant in your life, it might be a sign that it’s worth seeking deeper support. Psychotherapy offers the opportunity for an encounter that not only alleviates symptoms but also leads to genuine change and the rebuilding of relationships – both with others and with yourself.
